At Red bay there is a Basque Whaling Museum that was the target for our day's drive. We were introduced to how the whaling was done. I always thought the harpooned the whale and hung on until it died. The harpoon had floats attached and they added more harpoons they would create drag and ware the whale out until it died. The would then tow these 60 ton animals to shore where they would be harvested. Whale oil was the liquid gold of the time, but the use all parts. The oil was sent back to Europe for the sponsors of the exposition. Rendering whale oil is much the same as we would do on the farm for lard.

The day then turned sour on us. We had intended to go back and watch the whales until ferry time. However it was so foggy that we had to give that up and just wait for the ferry. Good news Sue had no problems this time. No white caps either.
You will notice in the photos a couple of time lapse videos of the drive.
