Day 23 Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve - Norstead

This morning  we went exploring the Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve (more info here). The wind was howling but up we went. Lots of unique wild flowers but the wind was blowing so hard they would not stand still and I had nothing to block the wind. Just have to do with the landscape.
It was nice to have 4 wheel drive as .parts were very steep.
Nice views

Lunch was in the truck overlooking the cape.

The afternoon was spent at Norstead. Norstead is a private site developed to depict the Norse life. The most interesting too me was the boat Snoori. The boat was sailed in 2000 from Greenland to here in L' Anse aux Meadows by 9 men. It took them 84 days for the journey. They were trying to recreate the Viking experience. Can you imagine living that long on this small sail boat!

Next was the living quarters. First was the store where you could bring something in and barter for needed items. Great fun for the children because the could really barter with the store keep.

In the middle was the kitchen and sleeping arrangements. The ladies were frying bread on the open fire. Of course we had to try some with the various jams( very taste).

Sleeping accommodations

Lastly in this main house was the work room where the ladies would spin wool and weave fabric. We got a demonstration of this loom.

The story of the religion as we were told is interesting. The native people taught the women religion and because a woman of religion couldn't sleep with a man unless he got religion, I guess we know the rest of the story.
